Sleeping like a baby is usually equated with a deep and calm sleep. But sometimes, babies also whine, complain, and make sounds like snoring during sleep, which makes parents worried. In fact, baby snoring is a normal thing.
Newborns tend to breathe loudly or snore, because the baby's respiratory tract is still narrow and contains mucus. Air passing through the respiratory tract that contains mucus will produce sound vibrations in the respiratory tissue, causing the baby to snore. This is a normal condition.
Snoring sounds in babies will disappear when the baby's respiratory tract is fully developed and the baby is able to swallow saliva. However, if the baby snores with other symptoms, it could be a sign of problems with the respiratory tract, such as colds, nasal deformities, or sleep apnea.
Troubled Baby Snoring
Snoring in infants becomes abnormal if it occurs in infants who are aged six months and over. A baby snoring every day can be a sign of a more serious problem, such as:Respiratory tract irritation
Snoring babies are often caused by irritation of the respiratory tract. This causes the baby's respiratory tract to secrete a lot of mucus and become inflamed. The most common causes are allergies and viral infections, such as the flu, which make it cough and runny nose.
Oblique nasal bulk (septal deviation)
Septum is the bone that gives a bulkhead to the nose so the nostrils and nasal passages become two. If this bone is tilted to one side, it will cause obstruction of one of the respiratory tract. Septal deviation can cause the baby to breathe using only one nostril and sound like a baby snoring.
Laryngomalasia (laryngomalacia)
Laryngomalasia is a disorder in infants that causes babies to breathe loudly and snore when sleeping. This is caused by the cartilage that functions as the opening of the respiratory pathway is not yet fully mature. Laryngomalasia will gradually disappear when the baby is over two years old. When babies with laryngomalasia inhale, they will be seen to have a hollow in the neck above the curve of the breastbone. In some infants with severe laryngomalasia, there will be eating and breathing disorders, so it is necessary to use a breathing tube and undergo reconstructive surgery.
Sleep apnea or sleep apnea
Sleep apnea in infants can be caused by premature birth, not yet the maximum function of the brain stem that regulates breathing, congenital abnormalities born in the heart and respiratory tract, to gastric acid reflux. Children or babies who have sleep apnea tend to snore and sometimes stop breathing for about 20 seconds, causing it to wake up.
Swollen tonsils
Inflammation of the tonsils and adenoids (tonsil glands) is a common cause of snoring in infants and children. In babies, these two conditions are generally caused by viral and bacterial infections. Symptoms of tonsillitis in infants can be in the form of increased salivation, the baby does not want to suckle, fever, to fuss because of pain.
Ways to Prevent Baby Snoring
Sometimes parents feel anxious when they find their baby snoring. The following ways can be done to prevent and treat baby snoring:Keep away allergens
Clean all allergens or allergens from the baby's bedroom. It's a good idea to move items that can easily collect dust, such as dolls, from the crib.
Improve sleep position
Position the baby to sleep on his back. The supine sleeping position of the baby can make it easier for the baby to breathe.
Open the baby's respiratory tract
If you have a shower, take a shower with warm water and hold the baby near the shower. Warm and humid air can make it easier for the baby to expel excess mucus in his respiratory tract. If there is no shower, you can use an air humidifier to help open the respiratory tract and soothe the baby's snoring sounds. Do this before the baby sleeps.
Nasal aspirator or baby nasal cleaning pipette
Use a baby nasal cleaning pipette to remove excess fluid from the baby's nose. The trick, insert the tip of the dropper into the baby's nose, gently press the balloon so that the mucus in the baby's nose can be sucked. Then remove the mucus. You can buy it at the nearest supermarket or pharmacy.
Saline Solution
If the mucus in the baby's nose is difficult to remove, use a nasal saline spray that is sold in pharmacies to thin the blockage. Spray a few drops of saline solution into the blocked nose of the baby according to the instructions for use. As an alternative to nasal saline spray, you can make a salt solution by mixing a quarter of a teaspoon of salt in a glass of clean water (about 200 ml). Spray the saline solution into the blocked nose of the baby using nasal aspirator.
